the 5 hindrances

Went to a short Dhamma talk today, and it talks on the 5 hindrances in life. The dhamma talk was short and simple, describing each hindrances using a bowl of water.

If we were to be overcome by sensual pleasures, it would be like a bowl of water coloured with 5 different kind of dye. Because of the dye, one would not be able to look clearly into the water, and see one's true self.

And if one is full of anger, it was described as a bowl of water, which is boiling. And again, looking into a boiling bowl of water, doesn't allow one to reflect on your ownself. What you would see, is only boiling bubbles of ill will and hatred.

Next up, sloth and torpor is being described as a bowl of water full with mould. One mind is totally blocked out from seeing oneself.

A mind with doubt (lack of conviction), is being described as a bowl of muddy water, which unables you to see through clearly.

Lastly, a mind which is restless, is described as a bowl of clear water, however, with ripples and waves on the surface. Even though one may be able to still look at oneself in the reflection, but, the mind does not rest there. One thought, leads to another, and a chain reaction begins.

All the above, would requires a calm, and strong mind to get rid of in order for one to proceed and breakthrough, especially in the meditation. I thought that the example given in the talk was precise, and clear enough for one to understand, and just want to share it with others.

The ugly side of Mayonnaise

While preparing our ingredients to whip up pasta salad, we discovered the ugly side of mayonnaise. Who would think that such yummy salad sauce can turn from

This

to

THIS???!!!!

The ugly truth is... we are consuming OIL AND FATS with every dip of mayonnaise. But up till now, I've yet to discover why the mayo disolve so quickly from its original solid form to the liquid yucky oil form. Its still a mystery to me!

Lovely breakfast at Privé

Found a little hideaway for breakfast, far from the hassle bustle of the city -Privé! Even if the place is slightly far, its definitely worth waking up to the lovely breakfast, and all the lovely views.

breakfast overlooking the yachts

Of course, the breakfast itself is yummylicious. Quite a fair bit of variety for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner as well, albeit pricier than the usual bread and butter breakfast. And we're talking about the range of $30 here for a good complete set of meal.

Egg Royale - poach egg with salmon

Egg benedict - poach egg with bacon

black forest cupcake (contains alcohol)

hazelnut praline cake

chocolate baked tart

milkshake : banana choc +almond , malted malteser, prive choc , bailey choc

You can take a stroll along the walkway after your meals, and its certainly worth the walk and the view.

Happy Wesak

Wesak - a day the great Teacher was born, the day he was enlightened, and the day he passed away. Even though the 3 incident happened on the same day, Wesak was not made to just commemorate Him. Instead, it serves as a reminder to all of us to follow His teachings - the middle path.

In the hussle of our busy work schedules, many have forgot to stop and see. We act faster than we think, out of rash rather than rational. And today, is a good day to just stop and see, think and digest what we've done. For all the many things that we've done, karma is always there, waiting for the right time to ripe. But what we can change, is to avoid evil, do more goods and purify our mind.

Family Bond

Blood is thicker than water. And that is how it is going to stay no matter what happens. Family bond is the strongest ties that one may have in this world. We may crave for material items, luxurious lifestyle and even lust/love relationship, but above all, when comfort is all you need, family would be the first that you think of.

To most of us, family was taken for granted that it is so easily forgotten. We do not go back home until we're tired of the outside world. We do not call back until we need a dosage of comfort. And the most saddening part of it is, some may find it too late to appreciate and cherish the love of their family members.

Family bond are those that cannot be broken, it does not just mean that you share the same surname, or the same house. It goes beyond that, you care for each other, love and cherish one another and will always be grateful to have siblings and parents like what you have. You do your best to keep the family together, and only with them, your life will be complete. It is a family that determines your home, not the place that you stay, or the house that you own. And hence, make time for them, for you will see how great an impact they will leave in your life.

FAMILY IS WHERE THE HOME IS
